Meet the Chapter Leader
I am a Tanzanian proudly serving the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. My fervent passion lies in the realm of community-based tourism, where I channel my efforts to foster sustainable development and empowerment within local communities. With a deep-rooted belief in the potential of responsible tourism, I strive to create positive impacts and meaningful connections. I am currently studying towards a Post Graduate Diploma qualification in Climate Friendly Travel through SUNx Malta in collaboration with ITS Malta.
Delphine Kessy (Tanzania) is a Lecturer of Tourism Studies at St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) with over fifteen years of experience in tourism education, business, research and community development. Her background in Agriculture, Business, and Tourism Studies provides interdisciplinary expertise in advancing sustainability agendas, including responsible destination management, community empowerment and development. Apart from working with wholesale and retail tour companies Delphine’s research focuses on sustainable tourism planning, marketing and community participation. Since 2017 she has coordinated a German–Tanzanian partnership promoting sustainable tourism development, low-carbon mobility and cultural heritage conservation in Tanzania, integrating technological innovation in real-world contexts. Furthermore, her leadership of the Gunzert House Foundation demonstrates her commitment to preserving heritage while creating sustainable opportunities. Thus, as an intern of the Climate Friendly Travel studies, Delphine aims to lead a chapter that advocate for inclusive and climate-resilient tourism systems that support local livelihoods and environmental stewardship as we transition to a low-carbon tourism future.
Cecil Sagawala is an entrepreneur from Tanzania with a strong interest in sustainable environmental solutions and circular economy initiatives. He is the founder of a green composting enterprise in Zanzibar that focuses on transforming organic waste into valuable agricultural products. His work promotes sustainable waste management practices while supporting local farmers and communities. Cecil is also exploring innovative wastewater treatment solutions for hotels and municipalities to expand environmental services in the region. Through the CFT Diploma Programme, he aims to strengthen his leadership, technical, and community development skills. He is passionate about creating practical, scalable solutions that contribute to environmental conservation and sustainable development in Tanzania.
Patrick Andrew Temu is the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Chapter Leader for Tanzania and Zanzibar, promoting climate-conscious tourism and sustainable development across the country. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Agricultural Extension and has extensive experience in the regenerative economy, sustainable landscaping, agri-tourism, and environmental conservation. Through his work with Zanzibar Flowers Ltd and Hangaya Company Ltd, Patrick has led innovative initiatives in organic waste management, transforming hotel food and plastic waste into regenerative compost and alternative fuel solutions. He is passionate about building partnerships among tourism stakeholders, local communities, and environmental organizations to support a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. Patrick actively advocates for the adoption of climate-friendly practices by hotels, eco-lodges, tour operators, and tourism businesses throughout Tanzania. He is also a recipient of the SUNx Malta Climate Friendly Travel Diploma Scholarship – ITS (2025–2027), where he is further strengthening his expertise in climate action and sustainable tourism. His vision is to build a vibrant Climate Friendly Travel community that positions Tanzania and Zanzibar as leading destinations for sustainable tourism while restoring nature, creating livelihoods, and advancing climate action.
